All About Mitzi & Mom
Hello, I’m Jane, the “MOM” of Mitzi and Mom. I was twenty when I bought my first cookbook. Little did I know then that the chef’s hats over the recipes meant the degree of difficulty. Ignorance became my bliss. For the next decade or two I learned mostly by many mistakes. I would look up what ingredients were, having never heard of techniques or equipment specific to a certain pastry. I loved the explorations. The many recipes I learned from my mother and Cora through my childhood also came into play as my knowledge grew.
It was in the middle of all this I decided I didn’t like pie crust because they were “gookie” on the bottom and had no flavor. So I decided to try to make one I would like. Now I make great pie crusts. My kids made good Guinea pigs. I worked on making their favorites better.
Creating what I call” memory food”. We all have these memories of food. How many times have we said or remember our mothers making the best of whatever we have ever tasted. I continue to think my mother made the best lemon meringue pie but I also know now mine is better. Her lemon meringue memory continues to be the best.
So, time goes, and I ask questions, many questions: How did people sweeten before Karo syrup? Why do I need to use canned pumpkin? The questions continued for the last fifty years. The cookies have also undergone their own transformations. But mostly I have pride in everything I make. The best is that there are many more tweaks to try to make it better. And it continues to be one of the great pleasures of my life. Mom
Hi, I’m Mitzi in the Mitzi and Mom. Baking has always been a source of happiness and joy for me. I started baking at a young age thanks to my mom. My brother and I would “help” her make her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies by passing her ingredients or she would let us measure them out and add them in when the time was right. Of course, we would wait and hope that the phone would ring so she would go into the other room (no cell phones then) to answer it so we could eat the dough. That memory always brings a smile to my face. The fun and joy we had making those cookies. As I grew up, I watched my mom make a croquembouche (a tall cone of cream filled puff pasties glued together with caramelized sugar), gingerbread houses, assorted cakes and pies. She taught me almost everything I know.
Fast forward 20 - 30 years and Life has taken many different turns. In 2004 I moved back to South Florida and attended the Le Cordon Bleu of Miami. I received an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management, graduating Cum laude in 2006. In 2015 I started watching these cookie decorating videos on YouTube. I thought why not try cookie decorating, it would be a great creative outlet for me and include my culinary degree. I made some decorated cookies for work for a special event. That was the beginning my passion and business for Cookie Decorating. In 2023 I moved back down to Delray Beach Florida to be near my Mom. In doing so, we talked about combining our talents and so Mitzi and Mom Cookies and Pie was born.
